The 2005-2006 concert season began with a return engagement at Riverside Church. During the season, the Quartet performed as part of the Trinity Concerts at One series at Trinity Church Wall Street and on the South Country Concerts series in Bellport, New York. Other highlights included a debut performance of Theodore Wiprud's The Open Door at a soiree concert in March as well as a return engagement at Riverside Church in June 2006. This concert, Songs of War and Peace, included works written especially for Phoenix by Paul Stephan, K. Scott Warren, and Richard Pearson Thomas, as well as A Sentimental Journey, a medley arranged for the quartet by David Root and Mr. Thomas.
In early 2007, the Quartet expanded the program of Songs of War and Peace with the addition of The Three Mystical Choruses by Theodore Wiprud and presented this in one of their favorite venues, a soiree at the home of Board Members Karen and Greg Dimit. In mid-February, Phoenix presented this concert on the Park Avenue Methodist Church’s Second Sunday Concert Series. In November, the Quartet premiered a new program entitled Fairy Tales and Lullabies, a rather whimsical and greatly varied assortment of music from Strauss to Billy Joel, including original music and arrangements by many of our favorite composer friends.
In addition, Phoenix developed a winter holiday program adaptable for corporate or private holiday festivities and over the past two seasons has performed it at holiday parties for the Society for Information Managers, WPP Inc., Rootchi Designs, as well as at private events.
Upcoming concerts include performances of Songs of War and Peace on the Christ Church Second Sundays Chamber Series in La Plata, Maryland and at the Newington Cropsey Cultural Studies Center in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. In May, Phoenix will premier a new program, Simple Gifts: Tracing the Shaker Influence in conjunction with the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design and Culture’s exhibition Out of this World: Shaker Design Past, Present and Future. In October of 2008, Phoenix will collaborate with the Long Island Composers’ Alliance in a program of music composed specifically for the Quartet.
The Phoenix Quartet (page 2)
The Phoenix Quartet is dedicated to
...performing music composed or arranged for vocal quartet
...commissioning new music for vocal quartet
...conducting educational outreach.
Vocal music is an especially powerful form of communication that can encourage a better understanding of the struggles and achievements that define people and can develop values that sustain people in life’s experiences. It has a unique power to create community. Throughout its rich cultural history and directly because of its melding of poetry and music, vocal music has had a place in all celebrations of life - to herald new life, mourn the passing of life, mark holidays, and to explore the human condition.
