Vocal music is an especially powerful form of communication that can encourage a better understanding of the struggles and achievements that define people and can develop values that sustain people in life’s experiences.

It has a unique power to create community.  Throughout its rich cultural history and directly because of its melding of poetry and music, vocal music has had a place in all celebrations of life -
to herald new life, mourn the passing of life, mark holidays, and to explore the human condition.

A Fashionable Lyric:
The Phoenix Quartet in Concert

We are delighted to be collaborating, once again, with the Bard Graduate Center: Decorative Arts, Design History, Material Culture (BGC) in a program of music based on the current exhibit at the BGC Gallery, Staging Fashion, 1880-1920: Jane Hading, Lily Elsie, Billie Burke. We are also delighted to feature props and costumes by designers Jane Wilson Marquis and Paul Cormack.

Please join us on Sunday, March 18th, at 3 pm, in the lecture hall at BGC, for our concert, “A Fashionable Lyric:  The Phoenix Quartet in Concert.”  As quoted in the BGC Gallery Programs brochure,

Music, like a well-chosen costume, has defined character in many  memorable stage performances.  In this unusual concert, The Phoenix Quartet performs a selection of operetta and art songs by composers including Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, and Franz Lehar.  The concert is preceded (at 2 pm) by a complimentary gallery talk in the Staging Fashion exhibition.

Tickets are $30 general admission, $20 seniors and students, (including the pre-concert gallery talk).  Register online at:  bgc.bard.edu, by email: programs@bgc.bard.edu or by telephone: 212-501-3011.

The Phoenix Quartet Mission

The Phoenix Quartet believes that song, with its melding of poetry and music, creates community and celebrates life.  We are dedicated to enriching audiences by performing music composed or arranged for the vocal quartet, commissioning new music for vocal quartet, and conducting educational outreach.
